Rock and Roll

CHALLENGE

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is the world’s most important rock destination. The multipurpose Foster Theater at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is used daily to host school groups, live concerts, special events, corporate events, intimate interviews, educational programs, panel discussions and video screenings.

“With more than 500,000 annual visitors, we work very hard to make AV work correctly all the time,” says Rob Weil, Senior Director of Production for the Rock Hall. He knows when the whole world is watching, there are no do-overs.

SOLUTION

Four Vaddio RoboSHOT 20 UHD cameras were installed in the fourth floor theater to record and capture historic moments, as well as to facilitate webcasting, videoconferencing, archiving and streaming the theater’s daily events. Vaddio’s PCC Premier controller is used in conjunction with a Newtek TriCaster Mini switcher.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s Library and Archives building contains the Rock Hall’s research collection of written and audiovisual materials relating to rock and roll history. Vaddio’s high-definition cameras play a key role in the library’s audiovisual element.

“Almost all of our content is archived, and now we can provide a much better product with great color accuracy,” adds Weil. “I appreciate the cameras’ zoom features and being able to control the cameras remotely from a single location is ideal.”

Ultimately, having a one-person camera operating system will provide significant cost savings for the Rock Hall. “We had used three shooters before, and now we only need one,” says Brett Friedman, Systems Integration Technician.

The PCC Premier is a broadcast-quality joystick controller that comes with many precision controls for the most demanding camera operation environments. It features full preset store and recall of up to 16 cameras, multiple color adjustments on the large touchscreen panel, and IP management for seamless camera control.

RESULTS

“We’re excited to have cutting-edge, American-made camera technology,” says Weil. “Sometimes you have to look outside the box, beyond the large vendors, and Vaddio has really stepped up to the plate. I appreciate the excellent support Vaddio provides.”

“Vaddio was an early partner when we built the Foster Theater, and was really helpful in walking us through what was then a relatively new process of archiving and streaming,” adds Weil. “They stuck with us through wall-to-wall renovations as technology has changed and they’ve helped us keep current. I’ve been very happy with the Vaddio partnership and hope to continue it.”

In addition to Vaddio cameras and camera controllers, other Legrand | AV products in the Rock Hall include Middle Atlantic racks and Chief display mounting products. Legrand | AV is a global leader in designing and manufacturing AV solutions and providing the foundation for amazing AV experiences.
