With more than 250 researchers working across nine expert centers, the school is a leader in practice-oriented research that delivers tangible results. As a strategic partner to numerous organizations, both local and international, Thomas More plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of education, business, and society. The institution is also a proud member of the KU Leuven Association, further reinforcing its academic excellence and collaborative reach.
The Challenge
One of the key lecture spaces at Thomas More is a large auditorium designed to accommodate up to 250 students. Historically, this space featured a fixed, custom-built lectern made from MDF wood. While functional for many years, the lectern was tailored to standing presenters and lacked the flexibility needed to support inclusive teaching practices.
Over time, the furniture became outdated and failed to meet modern accessibility standards. Most notably, lecturers who used wheelchairs were unable to access the built-in devices, as they were positioned at standing height. This limitation not only hindered teaching effectiveness but also contradicted the institution’s commitment to inclusivity and equal opportunity.
Additionally, any modifications to the space had to be scheduled around ongoing classes, making planning and execution a delicate process.

The Solution
To address these challenges, Thomas More partnered with Media Service Belgium, the institution’s trusted AV supplier, to identify a solution that would be both functional and inclusive. After evaluating several options, the team selected the Middle Atlantic Forum Lectern 60” from Legrand | AV, finished in Wilsonart® Asian Night – a color that seamlessly matched the auditorium’s existing design aesthetic.
The Forum Lectern offered a key feature that made it ideal for the space: electric height adjustability. This allowed lecturers to choose whether to present while standing or sitting, making the lectern accessible to all. The sleek design and customizable finish ensured the new furniture would integrate naturally into the existing environment without disrupting the room.
“At Media Service Belgium, we believe technology should remove barriers, not create them. By combining thoughtful design with reliable AV solutions, we help create learning environments where everyone can teach, learn, and connect effortlessly,” states Sharon Bilal, Account Manager at Media Service Belgium.
Installation was smooth and efficient. To enhance privacy when the lectern was raised, a front panel was added to prevent visibility underneath. The AV setup was straightforward: a TX unit was installed in the side storage compartment to extend the HDMI source for laptops, ensuring seamless connectivity for presentations.
The Result
The transformation of the auditorium has been met with overwhelmingly positive feedback. The outdated lectern has been replaced with a modern, inclusive, and highly functional solution that aligns with Thomas More’s values and teaching philosophy.
Lecturers now enjoy the freedom to choose their preferred presentation style. Those who favor making notes on the 24” writing tablet often opt to sit, while others presenting slides via PowerPoint prefer to stand. This flexibility enables educators to tailor their teaching approach to their comfort and needs, enhancing both engagement and effectiveness.
Tom Segers, Program Manager at Thomas More University of Applied Sciences, says: “Educators love the new flexibility to teach either standing up or sitting down.”
Most importantly, the new lectern ensures that all faculty members – regardless of physical ability – can fully participate in the teaching process. The space is now truly inclusive, reflecting Thomas More’s commitment to accessibility and innovation.

Conclusion
The successful upgrade of the auditorium at Thomas More University of Applied Sciences exemplifies how thoughtful design and strategic partnerships can drive meaningful change. By choosing the Legrand | AV Forum Lectern, the institution not only solved a practical problem but also reinforced its dedication to inclusivity, flexibility, and excellence in education.
This case highlights the importance of aligning infrastructure with institutional values and how even a single piece of furniture can make a profound impact on the learning experience.
